Iraq: China to write off 80 percent of Iraq debt

Iraq says China has agreed to write off 80 percent of its Saddam Hussein-era debt.

A statement posted on the Iraqi Finance Ministry Web site on Tuesday put Iraq’s debt to China at $8.5 billion.

The statement says the promise followed a meeting between China’s ambassador to Iraq and Iraq’s Finance Minister Bayan Jabr. It says the write-off “will enhance economic cooperation between the two friendly countries.”

The deal could further push Chinese business interests in Iraq. The China National Petroleum Corp. has secured two lucrative oil deals that reflects China’s drive to seek new energy sources for its growing economy.

Has anyone heard info on the upcomming dates that have been swirling around? I thought the 7th was to be of importance to the RV…..Adam a few weeks back you posted that we were looking at a possible RV within 10 days or by Feb. 7th…any new info on that? By the way, I think you are doing a great job with the info you have, its been great to follow so far! if anyone else thinks they know so much more then why are they here???Cuz they don’t have a clue…

I read on Dinar Daddy Tidbits about an hour ago a post by Adam, now it’s gone, it has been removed. Why? Adam’s friend had a rate spread. What happened to it?

I am getting conflicting stories on the current RV status, so I’m going to refrain from making an official statement… but here’s what I am hearing. This is only hearsay, I have not officially confirmed.
First, it appears that the HCL is on the verge of either going through or falling through, and we can’t get confirmation on it right now. The problem is that it’s not in the mainstream press because the details are confidential. Second, it’s late in the week and my CBI contact is very confident that it will not happen late in the week. That means, I believe, that we are waiting till next week at this point. Finally, I received an email sent around 8PM his time today that stated, “Adam, I apologize for the confusion. I am being told two slightly different things from my superiors and they make the RV rate impossible to determine, they are almost 70% different. Will be in touch.”
That 70% says to me a couple of things. We discussed a rate less than a dollar. A 70% difference means less than a dollar, but we already talked about how the rate was going to be higher than we thought possible. I’m guessing that’s somewhere around $20 [I think he meant $2], so the projected rate (according to him) is somewhere between 60 cents to $2. Like I said, it’s unverifiable at this point. Don’t quit your day jobs yet! This is Iraq we’re dealing with. Good news and encouraging? That is true – but it’s not the end of the road.

In my opinion, the fact that Malaki has competition in the new elections should move him to go for an RV soon in order to pull in votes from the Iraqis.

Seems very logical he could do this to gain needied support in the final days before the vote.

Thanks for the info that keeps coming in. I am sitting back patiently waiting.. (about two years now) Adam do you think they could go to a different currency altogether and our dinar would be totally worthless over night? Or will there have to be an exchange period to be able to switch to a new currency? Also what do you think about that W—-(I forgot what it was called) account that has to do with an ATM that switches out one currency for another?

The Iraqi Dinar won’t be swapped out in my opinion. It may never RV, but I don’t think they will lop or switch currency.

If they do swap, we have seen other countries do that and there has always been a window of time to cash in.

The only thing I am giving up on is this $390,000 dollar mortgage that I am paying on that will be cleared off after the RV !!!!
